New Media - Video

Loading...

I began experimenting with video last year, starting with an informal and freestyle movie about Carrie Freelance, our exciting move up the coast, and then moving on to covering events for which I obtained press passes, such as Slow Food Nation and the American Crafts Show at the Fort Mason pavilion in San Francisco. Since I had been used to print publications and interviewing people forwritten articles, the use of video gave me a great opportunity to interact in a more direct way with those I was interviewing, and for "show and tell" to really be a part of the story. I taught myself IMovie, and learned important editing features as well as transitions and special effects.  I really enjoy telling a story in this way and bringing ideas to life. I think a writer has a unique understanding of makes a good visual story, since we are trained to think about character, plot, details, and dramatic tension.

Blogs

Launched in 2005, I use the Carrie Writer blog to write posts on communication
issues, web 2.0, cultural reviews, etc. I have also linked it to my Facebook
and Twitter profiles and cross linked my web site and e-news. I have learned
about such issues as the importance of domain names, good sources for
obtaining images, best practices for the length and frequency of blog posts,
and a great deal about embedding video, links and widgets.

The Sunrise Advisors blog was launched about 1 1/2 years ago, in conjuction with a new arm of Carrie Freelance to focus on helping green businesses and creative community enterprises with marketing and other communications services. Topics have included relevant literature, as illustrated above, as well as highlights from important conferences such as the TED conference and the California Clean Tech Open; initiatives such as the Alliance for Climate Protection and Earth Day, and events of concern such as global warming and the oil spill in San Francisco Bay in the fall of 2007.

E-Newsletter

My monthly e-news focuses on communications issues, highlights from my blog, guest interviews, valuable print and online resources, and lessons I have learned along the way in terms of communicating to an audience. I have learned particularly over the last 2 years, the importance of having an online presence and also a personality, both in terms of personal and business branding, and that in some cases, the 2 inteconnect to a certain extent.  I have also learned many best practices in e-mail campaigns, particularly with my recent partnership as a Constant Contact Business Partner. When I am evaluating other publications and blogs to subscribe to, I look for the publisher's personal brand, and something that sets them apart from others. It may be as simple as the way they tell a story, or describe challenges they have overcome. The communication should be inspiring, instructive, and accessible. Unique challenges with this form of communication are: obtaining and maintaining subscribers, balancing graphics and text, analyzing tracking reports, developing relevant and lively content, and avoiding spam blocks. Marketing efforts since the launch have enable me to triple my number of subscribers.
